In line with ZetaChain’s mission to connect all blockchains, we’re scaling our events presence around the globe! Part of this effort is ensuring ZetaChain participates in the world’s largest web3 conferences and hackathons, which is why we organized a series of events at India Blockchain Week. Before we get to our impressive hackathon winners from ETHGlobal India, let’s start from the beginning!

India Blockchain Week, and the lead up to ETHGobal India!

It all started at FILBangalore where ZetaChain DevX Contributor Denis Fadeev kicked off a keynote on the state of blockchain interoperability.

This was quickly followed by a technical workshop on developing Omnichain Smart Contracts, capable of natively accessing all blockchains — even Bitcoin network.

The next day we came back to FILBangalore and joined the stage with prominent peer projects to discuss the future of fintech applications on top of blockchains. Here, we stressed the need for a better interoperability standard for DeFi applications. This was a great chance to talk about the power of Omnichain Smart Contracts i.e. the ability to deploy once and manage all chains and liquidity from one place. We also spoke about the ability for users to interact with Omnichain dApps from any wallet on any chain.

Next, we set up our booths for the official India Blockchain Week conference, Polygon Connect and Build for Web3 event, which is depicted below. To say our booths were crowded is an understatement! We fielded so many technical questions in-person and online in the Discord Dev Zone as builders prepped for the hackathon kickoff later that weekend.

We wrapped up with a panel on interoperability with Analog, LayerZero, LiFi, and Router Protocol at StationX’s Above & Beyond event (note, StationX is building cross-chain DAOs using ZetaChain’s Omnichain Smart Contracts!). This was a perfect opportunity to highlight the difference between bridge aggregators, cross-chain messaging solutions, and ZetaChain, the only product that supports one place of app logic, which can control assets in normal accounts on external chains — with no wrapping/locking tokens. This is what makes ZetaChain is the only blockchain to support apps with native Bitcoin interoperability.

The ZetaChain winners at ETHGlobal India

At last, Friday arrived, and more than 2,000 hackers lined up for the big ETHGlobal hackathon!

For 2 days and 2 nights, we advised developers building for a chance to win one of our three hackathon tracks: Best contract for Bitcoin, Best use of Cross-Chain Messaging and Best Omnichain contract. Without further ado, let’s learn about our ZetaChain winners!

Best contract for Bitcoin winner

Omnichain Ordinal Inscriber

This team enabled the ability to create Bitcoin-backed ordinal assets to inscribe data and use them within the DeFi ecosystem via ZetaChain’s omnichain toolkit. This means that users can pay and mint NFTs on ZetaChain from the Bitcoin network. Specifically, the chain agnostic integration allows the OSC to be called directly from a non-smart contract chain like Bitcoin and trigger a mint or trade on ZetaChain EVM.

The cross-chain dApp need NOT develop and deploy complicated event-driven contracts on multiple chains by cross-chain message-passing; rather the OSC is programmed in a synchronous way just like a regular contract. The ZetaChain system handles the asynchronous piece (i.e. the settlement on other chains).

Note, on ZetaChain’s roadmap is direct support of Bitcoin Ordinals inputs and the ability of OSCs to directly custody and manage foreign NFTs including Bitcoin ordinals. Also, expect the support of BRC20 fungible tokens based on the ordinal tech stack. Users will be able to send Ordinals on Bitcoin network to invoke the OSC.

Best use of Cross-Chain Messaging winner

Beneath Protocol

Beneath Protocol achieves seamless web2-to-web3 communication (and vice versa) via ZetaChain’s cross-chain messaging. One of the distinctive features of Beneath Protocol is its backward compatibility. This means that it integrates with existing email systems, creating a fluid and intuitive experience for users accustomed to traditional platforms. Interoperability is essential for a smooth UX in decentralized communication.

Beneath Protocol won this track because the team was able to extend ZetaChain’s cross-chain messaging to interoperate with additional blockchains not yet integrated into the blockchain protocol (Arbitrum and Base).

Best Omnichain contract winner

Zeta Lend

This team used ZetaChain’s Omnichain Smart Contracts to achieve any token from any chain lending and borrowing including support for native Bitcoin — all in a single step. A solution like this not only enables efficient cross-chain lending of real native assets, but also it does this with native BTC. We think a product like Zeta Lend is transformational in its ability to unlock dormant Bitcoin liquidity and holders on Bitcoin network.

Looking forward

As we write this, ZetaChain Contributors are gearing up for the next student-focused hackathon in France while Community Contributor Jonathan Covey takes the stage at Taipei Blockchain Week. We look forward to bringing you more updates and continuing to support development everywhere for next generation interoperable apps.

About ZetaChain

ZetaChain is the world’s first and only decentralized EVM-compatible L1 blockchain with built-in cross-chain interoperability, connecting all blockchains, even non-smart contract chains like Bitcoin and Dogecoin. With ZetaChain’s complete Omnichain toolkit, developers can build true omnichain dApps from a single point of logic, and users can access all of their assets, data, and liquidity in a single place, securely.
